Forrest Lee: Utilizing The Novel Machine Hearing Technology To Ensure Outgoing Product Quality While Building Quality Data And Systems

Suzhou, November 19, 2020 - At the "2020 International Forum of Reliability Technology " organized by China Society of Automotive Engineering (China-SAE), Forrest Lee, CTO of Synovate Technologies, gave the keynote speech on "Product Quality and Failure Detection Based on Machine Hearing", sharing Synovate's explorations and practices in the field of machine hearing technology.

During the forum, Mr. Lee pointed out how the impact of fuel pump failures by Japanese automotive supplier Denso at the beginning of this year, has been deeply felt by manufacturers as Toyota, Honda, Mazda, and Mitsubishi. Over 1.3 million vehicles have been recalled in China, and the number is still on the increase. Additionally, since the implementation of the "Regulation on the Recall of Defective Automotive Products" on October 1, 2004, more than 2,100 product recalls have been carried out in China, involving over 80 million vehicles. Vehicle recalls due to defects also lead to increased costs for companies. Quality is fundamental to the survival and development of a company, while pressure on businesses to reduce cost and improve efficiency has never ceased. In fact, according to the "2020 China Initial Quality Study (IQS)" published by J.D.Power, 8 out of the top 20 automotive quality problems are related to noise and vibration, such as transmission, engine, and sunroof noise, etc. Consumers are sensitive to abnormal sounds and readily associate them with failures.

How to ensure consisent impeccable product reliability, quality and health of product throughout its life cycle is the question. Current manual inspection is generally subjective, prone to human error and not verifiable or tracable by data or record. With advanced machine hearing technology, a variety of advanced algorithms and intelligent noise reduction ensures the accuracy of measurement, and efficient edge computing makes real-time detection possible, so internal defects of complex structures, even as slight as ball bearing defects can be identified and localized in real time without the need to disassemble. Mr. Lee presented the application case of using SigMA at the EOL inspection to evaluate the quality of NEV drive motors, demonstrating how reliable quality management measures bolsters client competitiveness. Not only was SigMA able to successfully intercept defective products, the high-quality data generated from the tests helped companies to effectively assess their production and to innovate.
